General Information

Small tree or shrub to 4 m tall. Terminal branches robust, obtusely quadrangular or triangular, striate, lenticellate-tuberculate, the internodes 3-5 cm long, glabrous. Young shoots subferrugineous-villose, with dense, rigid, pointed and ascending or subappressed hairs. Stipules three, subulate, substrigose, 4-5 mm long, the medial 2 mm long. Leaves opposite or ternate, 3-5-jugate; axis 6-13 cm long, robust, striolate, narrowly sulcate and, except for some hairs in the nodes above, glabrous, the stipels rigid, acute, 2-3 mm long, the internodes 1.5-2.5 cm long, the petiole 3.5-5.0 cm long. Leaflets rigid-coriaceous, frequently folded along the midrib and curving; petiolules 1-3 mm long, glabrous; blades 5-12 cm long, 2-5 cm wide, lanceolate-elliptic or lanceolate-oblong, asymmetric and rounded at the base, attenuate and acute to the apex, serrate crenate, the serratures (5-8 mm) with acute, callous, acumbent mucro; glabrous green and very lustrous above with midrib and secondary nerves well marked and prominent, conspicuous reticulum; rather brownish-yellowish beneath, glabrous or with very sparse, appressed and inconspicuous hairs on the main nervation, the costa strong and prominent, the secondary nerves 17-23 on each side, 3-8 mm apart, prominent but thin, subpatulous, the angle of divergence 70°-75°, curving and anastomosing, near the margin, the tertiary and minor veins prominently and minutely reticulate, the small areoles minutely papillose. Inflorescences axillary to 10 cm long, very dense, the peduncle 1-2 cm long, the branches trichotomous, angulate, striate, sparsely or copiously strigose, the ultimate very short, bearing glomerate sessile or subsessile flowers. Pedicels 0-1 mm long. Bracts linear, acute, 3 mm long. Flowers pentamerous, hexamerous; calyx five or six sepals 3.0-4.0 mm long, expanded 8-9 mm in diam, the lobes ovate-triangular 2.5-3.2 mm long, 2.0-2.5 mm wide, sericeous, especially on the midrib inside, glabrous except near the tips outside or sparsely appressed-puberulous, minutely tomentose at the margins; staminodia 10-12, the filaments glabrous, about 1.0-1.3 mm long, the anthers narrowly oblong, 0.7-0.9 mm long; ovary ca 1 mm long, hirsute; styles ca 3 mm long, pilose at the base. Follicles one-seeded, usually two to six developed, oblong-ovoid apiculate, 6-7 mm long, 3.0-3.5 mm broad, the apiculum 1.5-2.0 mm, minutely tomentose and densely hispid-hirsute with acute, patulous bristles 1.0-1.6 mm long. Endocarp corneous, hard, ovoid oblong, acutely apiculate, 5.5-6.0 mm long, 2.5 mm broad, shortly navicular when dry and open, acute. Seeds dark red, shining, oblong ellipsoid, 3.0 x 1.8 mm. Disc velutinous tomentose.
