General Information

Similar to A. puberulus but plants more delicate, with slender, often arcuate, much- to strongly-branched stems; young stems nearly glabrous or with decurved trichomes 0.1-0.2 mm long in two lines below nodes; internodes (0.5) 2-4.5 cm long. Leaves with petioles 0-3 mm long; leaf-blades linear-lanceolate to linear, (1) 2-4 (5.5) mm long, 1-3 (7.5) mm wide, attenuate to rounded at tip, cuneate at base, at margins entire to somewhat unevenly undulate-sinuate, glabrous, sometimes with few trichomes along basal margins, rarely along midnerves or lower surface, midnerves raised, yellow beneath, impressed above. Flowers mostly produced in summer to fall when plant is in leaf, in terminal, rarely axillary leafy-based racemes 2-8 (10) cm long, with internodes 2-7 (20) mm long; bracts ovate to subulate, 1.5-4 mm long, sometimes leafy; paired bracteoles subulate, 1.5-3 mm long; pedicels 2.5-7.5 mm long; calyces (4.5) 5-7 (8.2) mm long, tubes 0.8-1.3 mm long, lobes narrowly oblong-lanceolate (3.2) 4-6 (8.2) mm long, 0.5- 0.8 mm wide, 3-7.6 times longer than tube; inflorescence axis, bracts, bracteoles, pedicels, outer calyx surfaces closely hirtellous and with stipitate glands 0.1-0.2 mm long, with heads ca 0.1 mm broad, these sometimes restricted to base of calyx or rather sparse (rarely absent), calyx glabrous to sparsely glandular inside lobe tips; corollas orange-red, red to yellowish (albinos), 43-52 mm long, tubes 21-27 mm long, ampliate upper lobes 18-30 mm long, 3-5 mm wide, lower three lobes 19-31 mm long, 2.5-4 mm wide, external pubescence 0.2-0.3 mm long; filaments 30-35 mm long; anthers (2.5) 3.5-4.5 mm long; styles 42-55 mm long. Capsules 19-22 mm long; stipes 9-11.5 mm long; heads 10 mm long, 6-7 mm wide; seeds 2-4, orbicular, 5-6 mm long, 5 mm wide, 0.6-0.8 mm thick.
