General Information

Unkempt shrubs 1-2.5 (3) m high with mostly erect-ascending, branched main stems. Young stems with recurved puberulent hairs 0.1-0.3 (0.5) mm long in two lines below nodes, occasionally more strongly villous throughout; young bark exfoliating in papery vertical strips, old stems gray-brown, smooth; internodes 1.5-5 (10) cm long. Leaves opposite, mostly ascending; petioles (5) 12-20 (27) mm long, pubescent, hirtellous to villous; leaf blades lanceolate, lance-ovate, to narrowly lanceolate, (2.5) 5-9 (15) cm long, (0.5) 1.5-3 (5) cm wide, rather acuminately tapering to a narrow, often rounded tip, rounded at base, at margins entire to sinuate-undulate, lineolate when dry, moderately, rarely strongly, pubescent mostly along nerves on both sides with erect to curved trichomes 0.1-0.3 mm long to nearly glabrate above; young leaves with some longer hairs to 0.5 mm long on margins; midnerves raised beneath, impressed above. Flowers ver- nal, usually produced before leaves, clustered at nodes of previous season or borne in unilateral racemes 1-7 cm long with internodes 5-7 mm long; bracts lanceolate to ovate, 2-5 mm long, sometimes leafy, persistent; paired bracteoles lance-subulate, 3-4 mm long, 0.7-1 mm wide; pedicels (2) 5-8.5 mm long; calyces 6-8 (10) mm long, tubes 0.6-1 mm long, lobes 5, erect, linear-lanceolate to linear, 5.5-9 mm long, to 0.8-1 (1.2) mm broad at base, attenuate, 7-9 times longer than tube, equal to subequal; inflorescence axis, bracts, bracteoles, and outer sepal surfaces all closely hirtellous and with conspicuous tack-shaped, stipitate glands 0.1-0.3 (0.4) mm long with heads ca 0.1 mm wide; corollas rose- to salmon-pink to cream-white (albinos), 37-52 (57) mm long, tubes ampliate, 15-27 mm long, lobes strap-shaped, upper lobes 18-25 mm long, 3-4 mm wide, upcurved; lower three lobes 15-22 mm long, 2.5-3.5 mm wide, recurved, tube and lobes pubescent outside with scattered trichomes 0.2-0.7 mm long; stamens 2, filaments attached to mid-upper tube, 22-30 mm long, glabrous; anthers 3.5-4.5 mm long (dried), reddish, anther sacs united for ca 70 percent total length, one slightly longer at base; styles 30-55 mm long, glabrous, lobes 0.2-0.3 mm long. Capsules clavate, 20-22 mm long, glabrous, tan; stipes 10-12 mm long, flattened, head apiculate, 10 mm long, 5-6 mm wide; retinacula 3-3.5 mm long, erose at end; seeds 2-4, ovate to orbicular, obtuse to rounded at tip, obliquely notched at base, 5.5-6 mm long, 4.5-5 mm wide, 0.7 mm thick, glabrous, stramineous or darker, edges entire, rounded.
