Primary stems to 30 cm long, irregularly branched, branches short to medium-sized, to 2 cm long; stems in cross section with 4–6 rows of small, thick-walled, yellow to red epidermal cells, cortical cells enlarged, firm-walled, hyaline to yellowish, central strand small; rhizoids in dense groups, dark brown to blackish, smooth, not branched, from circular clusters of initials abaxial to the leaf insertions. Leaves trimorphic: stolon/primary stem leaves, secondary stem leaves, and branch leaves. Stolon/primary stem leaves erect, strongly clasping, ovate-lanceolate, 1.5–2.5 mm long; apices long-acuminate to piliferous, sometimes twisted; margins generally plane, subentire; costae single, slender, tapering to the apex, commonly ending above midleaf; median cells linear-flexuose, 45–80 # 5–7 µm, firm-walled, often porose; alar cells weakly differentiated. Secondary stem leaves erect-appressed, broadly ovate-lanceolate, to 2.0 mm long, otherwise similar to primary stem leaves. Branch leaves closely spaced, squarrose to squarrose-recurved, not clasping, broadly ovate to orbic-ular, 0.8–1.5 mm long, short-acuminate to apiculate; margins plane, serrulate; costae single, slender, tapering to the apex, ending 1/2–3/4 the leaf length; median cells fusiform to linear-flexuose, 35– 70 µm long, firm-walled, not porose; alar cells weakly differentiated, subquadrate, firm- to thick-walled, at times porose. Dioicous. Perichaetia lateral on stems and branches. Setae red to dark red, twisted when dry, 1.5–2.5 mm long, smooth to somewhat roughened below capsules. Capsules exserted, erect, cylindric, constricted at neck, 1.5–2.3 mm long; exothecial cells quadrate to oblate at the mouth, ir-regularly rectangular, below with thick vertical walls and thin horizontal walls; stomata superficial on neck; opercula 1.0 mm long, shortly rostrate; annuli rudimentary, of several rows of thick-walled cells; exostome teeth linear, yellow, papillose; endostome hyaline to light yellowish, lightly papillose, 2/3 the exostome length, basal membranes low, segments linear, perforate below, cilia rudimentary or absent.
