Estambres 6 o más, los filamentos filiformes, generalmente connatos en la base en una falange, las anteras basifijas; estilo alargado; estigmas horizontales o deflexos, ampliamente 3-lobados. Aprox. 125 spp. Panamá y Sudamérica, especialmente Minas Gerais, Brasil. La única especie en Mesoamérica es Vellozia panamensis . Shrubby plants with rather stout, dichotomously branched stems covered with the persistent bases of fallen leaves; leaves crowded at the tips of the branches, stiff and narrow; flowers solitary on long peduncles in the axils of the upper leaves, perfect, regular, sometimes rather showy; perianth segments 6, free, the outer occasionally somewhat calycine; stamens 6 or more; filaments united to the base of the perianth segments; anthers basifixed, longitudinally dehiscent; pistil inferior, 3-celled, the style slender, with a capitate or 3-lobed stigma; fruit a loculicidal capsule; seeds numerous, borne on stalked axile placentas.
